Sylvia holds a degree in M.Sc. in biophysics and medical technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in addition to a Ph.D. in forensic science from The University of Copenhagen (KU). After her Ph.D., she has worked as a research and innovation consultant and as an Examiner at the Danish Patent and Trademark office (DKPTO).

Her technical field includes medical devices and mechanics, and her expertise is analysis of patents such as infringements, freedom to operate, invalidity and novelty.
